I called a local trani' shop and got a quote just for kicks. With your old trans as a core a rebuilt trani' for your car on the shelf here R&I  was under $1000.00 bucks, here in Alaska. So you got ripped off big time!
Just  FYI...
Hey, you can hate the game but don't hate the player.

Hey you big bad internet meanie..........That doesn't sound very supportive to me!  Tipopiola

Hey, don't rip on Granholm. She inherited a whole state full of problems. It is bleak over here in west Michigan too! Don't get married to solve finacial problems. I remember being 21 and very few prospects, but your destiny is in your hands. My advice to you is get and education. There are many 2 year degrees available and you qualify for assitance because you make no money. Borrow if you have to, but it will pay tenfold in the end.
Your posts are very literate with good penmanship which tells me you paid attention in high school. Find a way to get 2 more years and you will get hired. Good luck

terrible one

I don't think anyone is trying to rag on you or piss you off. Everyone is just telling you that you didn't get a very good deal on teh transmission replacement. Also many are warning you that buying the Charger is only the first thing. It takes a lot of money and time, and then either a lot more money or the skill to do some stuff yourself.

There are other ways to make a living.!!  You just have to keep on trying and thinking of ideas within your abilities :pity:  If you love cars so much maybe you should think about starting your own classic auto detailing or work for a dealer? ? ? :yesnod:   Most of us here have had hard times in life as well, but it will pass.   I live in California and it cost me over $3,700 a month just to live.(property,wife,2 kids=no life) :icon_smile_big:  I don't know how it is in your area (economy) BUT, you are still young and will have opportunities. :yesnod:  Your tranny going out is a freak thing, you can and will recover.  You also have to keep in mind that alot of us have allready been there and are a little older (30's-40's ect.) and worked longer so we make more.  Bottom line ,  you will get there too :pity: :yesnod: :icon_smile_cool: good luck.               Chuck...........................

first off, 3k for that trans was a huge rip off.

I didn't have my own car at 21. I used my parents car. I got my first car my 1969 Mach 1 when I was 23 almost 24. I had it a month and the tranny went out on it. Everyone wanted to rebuild it for almost 2k, and they were not going to do the work themself, just ship it off to some place in seattle. So I blew all of my money fixing the thing right after I bought it ( I shopped around for a way cheaper price and spent 1.2k on everything) and didn't have any money to really get the car running right. Same could have happened with the charger if you bought it. I also didn't have another car so I would have to borrow my parents car when the Mach 1 broke down about once a month. Yeah it might have been small problems, but with no money the cars down and not getting fixed. Keep looking at cars and keep saving. Eventually you will find what you are looking for. Everything will be right then and you can bring a charger home. If you want a job keep working at it. I know its frustrating as I have job hunted for two months with no results or call backs. I just went to my old job and they hired me. The pay wasn't great but it was a job. It got me through school. Keep your head up and yours eyes peeled. A charger will come along some day.

You can rant all you want, people do it here all the time & there's nothing wrong with it. But being 21 puts you in a position where you still need to learn quite a bit. If you think being a kid & a female is the reason that people turn you down for owning a Charger, you should think more, or maybe in a different way. Maybe the person passing judgement on you & not selling you a car is just an a-hole. You won't change their mind or their discriminatory views, if that's what it was, so find someone normal selling a car & buy theirs.

I can't help say it, but at 21 & not having what you want seems a bit whiny. (No offense meant either.) This is a public forum, so you will see some public opinion whether you like what you read or not. Thicker skin helps too. As for what you paid for a transmission, we've all overspent on things in the past. I know I have, so just get over it, move on, & hopefully you will learn from it. If you don't, you'll stay broke & never get a Charger.

For every Charger purchase story by a member on here, there's a big build up prior to getting it. That means things happened along the way like sacrifices, years of saving, selling something, borrowing or whatever it took to get it. Some people are born wealthy & could have whatever they want, but the majority of the people in the hobby do not sip free booze at Barrett Jackson & wave money in front of the seller to spoil a sale to another person who wants the car.

If I had a Charger for sale & you wanted to buy it, as long as you got there first & left a deposit, you'd own it. If you called me back telling me your transmission story & said you need the deposit back, you may or may not be so lucky. People back out of deals every day & screw sellers in the process. Not every seller is a salesman selling for a profit, & some people have luck worse than yours & need cash fast. Be patient & you will find a Charger, others have & waited a heck of a lot longer for one.

I'll also say that by having the transmission die on the way was a good thing. If you bought the Charger & the tranny let go the day after, how the heck would you pay for the trans & restore the Charger?  :shruggy:

Some advice from an old guy here.  I am 57 and have seen good times and not so good times in my life.  I didn't have a Charger until I was over 30.  I wanted one in the worst way in 1970 when I got out of college.  Priced a brand new 70 RT Hemi.  Couldn't afford it then.  I was upset because I thought I would be guaranteed a new Charger after I got through college.  Had to pay off loans first.

I did what others here are suggesting you do.  I finished 4 years of college and drove an old wreck during that time.  Had to fix broken parts all of the time by myself, sometimes out in the North Dakota cold freezing my XXX off.

I have one very simple piece of advice for you.  Go back to school.  Get at least a 2 year degree.  Consider moving to someplace that has a job for you.  But without college it will be tough all over.

Get that degree.  The pay back is big.  The effort and hardship for 2-4 years is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Good Luck

I will say to listen to this guy.  He works for a company that is very well known in our area, TRUST me.

Also, as I said get the degree, night classes while you work part time if you have to.... It WILL pay off in the long run.... Heck then you just buy one done and DRIVE...

to afford my car when was 24 I worked two jobs for two years,..
and when i found my ride in a junk yard about to be crushed the yard owner jacked the price up to $ 2,800 bucks cause they knew I wanted it,..  :flame:
Ever have that feeling that your being screwed?.. I still managed to talk him and his smirking ass down to $2,300 by lying that that was all the money i had,.. (my budget was really $5K  ;)

But later, tellin my story here on this site some folks told me that i surly "got ripped off because they got their numbers matching Hemi four speed in great condition for $8oo bucks" and some such nonesense...  :yesnod:
Seems to me that if your not working now, you really can't afford a project charger and a daily (your neon)
from what you've said (regarding the tranny) you got a really steep learning curve ahead..

But good luck all the same..
BTW: your on this site to find a charger and learn something i would think...

The Ghoul

I have never not had a job for more than a week since I was 13.
here are a couple of keys.
first, no job is below you any job is better than no job. If its something that you hate you will have no prob walking off the job and telling them off when you get something better. also employers are more likely to think that your not a screw up if your employed.
second, keep persistant, ask them when they will be looking at the applacations, call them the day after that. If they dont give you an answer to when they will be looking at the app. give it a week or so and call them back to check to see if they got a chance to look at it.
third, dont just drop off an applacation or resume with an employee, ask to talk to the person in charge of hireing. Look proper, speak well, be plesent no matter how big of a jurk they are, and if you smoak make sure you dont smell like it. I have also had good luck using the same approche to picking up applacations. you will always do better if the prospective employer meets you, talks to you, and gets a good vibe from the get go.
alot of places do on line applacations, try applying on these websites
home depot
lowes
barns and nobel
borders
sears
usualy under 'career oppertunitys' or somthing like that.
it may take a while and the questions might be BS but like I said any thing is worse than nothing.

I agree on the school issue.
If you think your situation now is a pain Imagine going thru it again in another 10, 20 , or even 40 years from now.
You dont even have to go full time. I imagine there is a community college in your area that you could take evining or weekend classes.

yeah, in 1984!!
My dad does stuff like that to me, when ever I do something to my car, or need to replace any thing and I talk to my dad about it he always comes back with 'that should have only cost you $xx'. Well the last time he did this type of stuff was when he was a teenager 40 years ago.

Piece of advice. Sorry to hear of your mishap but, press on. You're still young and need to build a life. Second, don't sweat not getting the Charger. You can find another Charger soon enough. Things happen beyond your control. At least your still alive and you have a fiance.  You have other things to be thankful and happy for. Just keep up the faith and don't give up. Later.

Look for a job with the Government.   Federal gov't jobs pay $13 an hour to start at the lowest wage level.   You may have to start as a secretary , or mechanics helper, or whatever , but you are guaranteed a paycheck every two weeks, health insurance [ you have to pay a %], more sick and annual vacation than most private firms.
Once you're in - you have to be a Serious screw up to lose your job.  Unless a whole dept gets downsized , but that is very rare. And besides it is one of those jobs where you gain preferance for other gov't jobs.
Not like working for a grocery store , where if they go under, the other grocery store in town must give you a fair shot at a job - not gonna happen.

There are thousands of Chargers out there - the supply will not run out in our lifetime - Each and every week there are at least 100 chargers for sale on www.collectorcartraderonline.com   .That is 2 chargers for every state , each week, in only one advertising forum.

America is at a point where people are expecting instant gratification, why do you think the federal budget defecit is so high.  Re-examine your budget, start saving 10% every month.   10% is a medium size fast food meal instead of a large size.  10% is turning off the lights when you leave a room or putting on a sweater and dealing with 65 degrees in the house instead of 70 degrees.    Little savings add up !

I never thought I would go there when I was growing up - but when I had no skills except a good intellect and healthy body, no decent job, and no prospects for a brighter future -  The Military provided a way out and upwards.    Looking back would I do it different, sure, but that's water under the bridge.  Now I make what you would consider good/.great money, 15 years later.   But I still work an absolutely craaappy shift [ midnight till noon ].  It never ends , there are always compromises.
Good luck, remember, no matter what you are told, the only person who has Your best interests at heart is You.

I couldn't agree more. First off, dropping $3800 on an 8 year old econobox is just plain nuts. You could've got that done for 1/3 that, maybe less. You were screwed.

More importantly, even though I realize that you're 21, if this truly is some sort of cataclysmic event in your life, I worry about your future mental state. To be blunt, IT'S AN EFFING CAR. You didn't get it. It is hardly the end of the world. If this is the worst thing that you've had to deal with in your life up until now, you've been blessed. Moreover, unless you are walking around lucky, you can count on some truly terrible things that come down the road of life that will make losing out on a car seem like a joke.

I think that all these guys in here that you seem to think are so lucky will tell you that they have been kicked in the groin by life too many times to count. You pick yourself up, GET SOME PERSPECTIVE, and move on. Self-pity makes for poor theatre.

Just calling them as I see them.

I want to throw my two cents in cause I am about your age (24).  I bought my charger when I was about your age (20). I was obsessed with getting one. I sold My Buick that I built up in high school to get one. I was that opsessed I let my first car go for it (big regret). After I paid off the loan for the buick I had $5000. I bought a $4000 hulk of a minnesota rust bucket. At the time it was a bad deal, but I didn't care I wanted a charger. I trailored it home and Put it in my folks barn and there it sits almost 5 years later. Life happened.

I needed reliable transportation so I bought a truck. I had to work my way through college (no student loans when I graduated cause I worked two jobs during the week and delivered newspapers on the weekends). My grandfather passed away and left me his classic Cadillac (which is the most important car that I will ever own).   I met a girl and we settled down and bought a house. I got a sweet deal on a 66 Impala convert that I couldn't pass up and I had to fix more on this car than any other. Things broke and I had to repair them. I just had to sink $800 into my 1 1/2 year old truck because the brakes had a catastrophic failure and it is 1000 miles out of warranty. I work about twenty hours of overtime a week to afford the lifestyle that I have. It is tough but I get the job done. But the Chargers importance in my life is not what it once was. Sure I want to actually drive it down the road someday. But I want to do it right. So it sits awaiting the day that I have the space the time and the money. Maybe if I wait long enough there will be actual replacement parts available! ;D

The only reason I bring this up is. I am impressed with your drive!  :yesnod: You are more motivated than most people our age. I was and still am the same way. I have accomplished all this stuff that no one said I could do. I did it with the love and support of my Girl and my family. They supported my every decision and let me work through things myself. There is no better feeling than achieving your goals by yourself! Achieving the unachievable. You are young and will be disappointed just like I am with certain things, but use that drive that you have to persevere I applaud you and all I can say is keep digging and life will be looking up.

My mechanic told me, "I couldn't fix your brakes, but don't worry I made your horn louder."

I hope no one's waiting for this guy to keel over dead. My wife has instructions to crush all of my cars so that no one else can have them after I'm gone...just kidding. Actually, I've already made a list of the family members that get each of the cars after I'm gone. That's why I can't sell them...they're already promised out. I keep buying more and more cars. I've even got family members calling me about cars that they've found. That's nice of them.

As for having the money to buy my cars, I work seven days a week and sometimes 16 hours a day.
