I don't understand it. Why do things have to be this way?? Everytime I get enough money to get a '68 to'74 Charger, something in my life goes wrong. I saved up $3800 and Two weeks ago I found a '70 Charger 383/auto about 50 miles from me, ran good but had some quarter rust, I got the guy down to $3000 (yah I know!) and on the way to the bank, my Neon's engine starts to rev really high (I am going up a hill) and I noticed I wasn't actually driving forward, just rolling. So I get over the hill and pull to the side, shut the car off and pop the hood. My tranny fluid was low so I had it towed to the nearest tranny shop and the guy there was nice enough to put more fluid in, but after he backed it out of the bay there was a nice puddle of tranny fluid and it slipped again right there with him driving. Not only are my tranny seals blown but he said one of the gears is bad. So I had to use my $3800 to get a brand new transmission installed in my '98 Neon (after waiting 4 days for it to come in and yes I had to leave my Neon there and take a freaking taxi home). I was SOOOOO CLOSE to FINALLY getting a Charger!!! Why does this have to happen to me???? I only have $87 left after parts and labor and all the other stupid stuff. I'm pissed!!! It took me a year to save up that much after paying my other bills. I'm not like you guys who have good jobs (or one at all-try getting a job in my area right now YOU CAN'T Thank You For Nothing Jennifer Granholm!!) And being 21 and a female, people hassle me all the time!! Either I don't get hired because I am a female or because they say I'm not qualified...well if I had a job I could afford to go to night classes, get better suited, and get a better job. You guys can all go out and spend thousands scooping up Chargers and doing whatever with them and life just keeps kicking my ass! I'm seriously at the point of just screaming until my vocal cords shred. I never knew how much I wanted a Charger until it was literally ripped away from me. I called the guy who was selling it and do you know what?? Another guy came to look at it while I was on my way to the bank and he bought it right out from underneath me!!! Am I not allowed to have one because I'm a female or something? Are Chargers only for guys?? Every single one I have looked at (I looked at 4 others before the '70) I was turned down. One guy even said he didn't want a kid to buy it. What an ass! I told him I was 21 and that I have never been in an accident, zero tickets and I have owned classic cars before. He said it didn't matter because it "wasn't a girls car". I seriously wanted to kick him in the junk! I have become so bitter and I don't know how to get out of it. I am never going to be able to get a Charger (or ANY '68-'74 Mopar for that Matter) because their prices keep going up as does the price of gas. By the time I am able to scrape up enough money for one again, it may be 10 years down the road and maybe I won't have interest in one anymore or the price of gas may even be $5 to $7 a gallon or more. It's rediculous! I mean, once all the gasoline is gone, it's gone, and I don't think a Charger would run very well on corn fuel.....
You guys amaze me yet make me angry because you can afford to have a Charger. I'm not out to hurt anyones feelings but I just feel like I am in a hole and can't get out. I don't think I am depressed, just tired of my state's economy and how things are right now with the job search, bills & car repairs, among other things. I even heard that the city where I live has the highest unemployment rate in the state, or possibly the country (I think the state). Anyway, it's always good to vent, or blow off major steam. Hope you guys don't mind because I'm not trying to put anyone down, I am just tired of it all. Hopefully you guys can see where I am coming from, take care!

Sorry for your misfortune.   Go ahead and rant.

Buuuuuutttt....   you spent how much for a tranny on a '98 Neon?  :o     Sorry but the car isn't worth $3K itself.   :rotz:    I believe SRT-4's will retain some value but any other Neon is a throwaway.

I wish I'd have known..... I got a 97 with a blew motor and a rebuilt tranny with 15,000 on it in the yard.

Also, I know how ya feel about not being able to go right out and get your charger. Only I'm 25 and work my ass off and still can't afford it.
Good luck though!

Join the club...It's called life. There will always be things that come up unexpectedly. Kids need things, houses need repairs, cars need repairs and the IRS man is always there with his hand out. Persistence is the key. Don't give up. Stsrt saving for the Charger and put a little extra away in another account for everyday emergencies. Good luck!

Look on the bright side...you're young and we're old.
You'll have plenty of time to buy cars, but we'll never be young again.

Well sorry to hear,  However,  SOME ONE shafted you if it cost you over 3000 to do the tranny.....

I am sorry to tell you life does happen and the worst times.

I have a very good job but I ate bread and water to put myself through school..... I have a decent job and now when LIFE does not get in the way I can and do buy cars.  I have several things pass me by during this time.... but well worth it now.

Hate to tell you this WHEN It is ment to be it will BE>........ most people hate to heard that..... Second if it is a car you really want you best put a down payment on it and have an agreement.  Not all people are that way..  but a good idea none the less.

BEST WISHES...

*I just did a re-read on this and it sounds a little harsh at times, thats not the way I mean any of it. I dont mean to challange your abilitys like it sounds. just keep that in mind while your reading this*
hey, all I can say is hang in there.  :icon_smile_big:
You mentioned jenny from the block, that means your In michigan. I feel your pain with the young and working thing. Im 23, live in macomb (20 or so miles north of detroit) and have never had more than two nickels to rub together, but from that I learned every thing I know about cars.

I am not trying to knock you here but you here or kick you when you are down but, do you have any one who knows about cars / do you work on them your self?
The only reason I bring this up is because you mentioned that you had the transmission switched out by the shop. I know its a diffrent situation when it comes to your daily driver but transmissions at bone yards don't cost that much and are not that hard to switch out. I had a trans nuke in a van I was using for a daily driver and 3k later I vowed I would never let a shop work on any of my cars again!
What I'm trying to get to here is do you think that you might be a little optimistic about your expectations of the charger?
You mentioned that you've owned classic cars before, did you have any trouble with reliability?
Did you work on it your self?
Once you do get the charger you will be working on it alot, if any thing to keep it running, that can be a bit of a deterent for people that arnt expecting it.
Comming from a similar position as you (early 20's going to school underemployed) the only reason I can play around with my cars the way I do is because I have had many cars that I had to fix on a daily basis. I have had cars that i have set up drive trains for; not knowing what I'm doing, but learning along the way.
Basically what it boils down to is the reason I have a charger is I never gave up on it and still am not giving up on it. I bought a cameo for $1000 my senior year of highschool, worked on it , fixed it up and traded it for the charger i have now which is not going to see the road for about 5 years because I'm going thru it and fixing every thing little by little.
I don't mean to discourage you, or make you feel any worse about your situation. I am not trying to sound mean on any of this, its not how I am and its not what I want to convey here. You can get there but it will be alot of learning and alot of hard work but if your determaned you will get there, just dont give up on it.
I just want you to know its not a girl vs boy thing. Sh*& happens and it sucks that it has to happen like that but just think, how bumbed would you be if your daily transportation did that after you emptyed your account to buy a charger, and you had to sell the charger to get into something reliable again.

The Ghoul

wow and I thought id be the first post in.... I guess that happens when you take 15 minuts to get the wording right so you dont offend some one.
Moril of the story.

Exactly what I was gonna say. :yesnod:
How about this problem...imagine having a Charger, but not being able to drive it since 1993 because 95% of your money needs to go to support your family, raise your kids & not end up on welfare in the process. Yep, I've had things like that happen too. In fact, for a few years there I swore that little green gremlin's seemed to always know when I had some extra money...something would always happen to suck my wallet dry. :flame:

Like Blown70 said, when it is meant to be, it will happen. Maybe this is one of those life lessons you're supposed to be learning from. Go at it in steps, get a job nailed down first, then work toward a Charger.
Oh & next time you're buying a Charger, fib a little & tell the guy that you're buying it for your husband (or Dad, or brother) as a surprise...what he doesn't know won't hurt him. ;D

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

98neongirl

it's ok if you don't like Neons but the funny thing is they are very reliable cars. I spent $2200 on a brand new, not remanufactured tranny and had to have it shipped from a California warehouse, which cost $450 give or take, total $2650 on that, then a $100 towing bill, and $70 or so back and forth to the shop by taxi few times, and labor itself to get the old tranny out, put a new one in, plus whatever shop fees labor alone from them cost $600. Yeah I got ripped off I know but it was a weekend and I had to rent a car (Enterprise) too for 5 days.....but they put me in an '06 Charger SXT V6 (I took my frustration out on that....) so after everything, as well as having to fill up the rental car before bringing it back, I have a whopping $87 left (I did go grocery shopping and did laundry so not all of my money had to do with the whole situation....) but hey life sucks sometimes. I just have to wait til it gets better. I am in Jackson, MI. I couldn't afford college but I did graduate, all I am really qualified for here is fast food, helping elderly people with errands (which I can only do a few times a week when I have access to our one and only car) or factory work, which the last factory I worked at I got harassed and got my car keyed by older guys who just wanted to be asses. One of them even did something to me I am very very ashamed of but he got arrested for it...I want a Charger!!!!!!! I don't care if it has a little slant 6! Just to say I have a Charger is gold for me. It's true about what would have happened if I had bought the Charger then the neon took a crap...but I guess out of this all that was the only "good" thing that happened. I appreciate everyone here, I do eny you though. I used to have a 100% original survivor '65 Chevelle Malibu SS, madiera maroon w/ black interior, 283 Turbofire with a powerglide auto that my real father won off of a radio station here in Michigan called Oldies 94.1 (it was an oldies station back in the mid 90's, then it changed to "The Bear" 94.1, it is something else now). My stepdad had a '70 GTO and a '71 GTO, but he wouldn't let me touch those...if my real father hadn't passed away I think he would have tought me a lot about working on older cars (he won the Malibu) which he used to have a '37 Ford Firetruck from Baldwin, MI. he was trying to restore, but he got cancer and passed away August 9th, 1996, I was 12 and never got to say goodbye...that hurts me the most and I think about it all the time.

tipopiola

I won't rip on neons.  I bought one for my wife brand new in 01'.  Now its got 156,000 miles on it.  We drive that thing A LOT!  So far we haven't had to replace anything other than pads, fluids, and bulbs.  I will disagree with you on the whole male/female thing.  No one ever threw any Chargers at me just because I'm a guy.  No one gave me a price break because I'm a guy.  When I bought my R/T both me and my wife were married full time college students with tuition payments, car payment (neon  :icon_smile_big:), truck payment, mortgage payment, etc.  Right now I'm just finishing up my schooling and am student teaching at a high school.  That means that I teach full time and don't get payed a dime for it.  Theres ways to make things work, but you gotta be creative.  I'll be honest with you, if you're looking for a car that is advertised in the paper or on the internet you'll be in competition with everyone else that reads that paper or visits that site.  You gotta drive out into the neighborhoods or into the country and keep an eye out for a car peeking out from the middle of some pine trees or behind a barn.  They always show up when you least expect it.  Good luck, and give up the "poor me I'm a 21 year old girl" thing.  Tipopiola :icon_smile_big:

Shakey

The Ghoul

yeah that happens when your dealing with 21 year old girls  :icon_smile_big:
im just kidding around.
sorry bout every thing that has happened... I know the want for a classic but you just gotta sit down and think about if its right for you at this point in your life.. Sounds to me like you need to get some stablility before you can take on a dependent .
again not trying to be hars but these cars are dependents. I know I wouldent be able to have one if I didnt still live with the 'rents.
pluss jackson has got to run you on speeding tickets. i know I get at least one every time i pass thru on the way to Kalamazoo!

98neongirl

"Give up the poor me I'm a 21 yr old girl" thing? I never said poor me...so if you are just going to judge me and be negative then why even talk to me? I don't need any more negative things in my life. I'm sorry but this isn't an act... if you want to watch drama then tune in to American Idol or something. The funny thing about all of this is I don't know why I chose to come here anyway. I don't own a Charger, I want one but will probably never get one, and it seems that people like to make smartass little comments. My Neon is a very reliable little car, which is why I was so angry that it had to break down and be so costly...I never had any major problems before. I love 1st Gen Neons almost as much as I love Chargers so I will defend them. I need positive support right now..give me good ideas about how I can dig myself out of the hole I'm in? What did you all have to do? I don't have any kids and I am not married, I have been to about 20 different interviews within the last year, and nobody will give me a chance. I am very polite and honest, I ask them what they are looking for and I tell them what I have to offer. For some reason, all the restaurants I applied to either hired other people, wanted to help out school students by hiring them, didn't call me back, didn't set up an interview, or a couple said they couldn't find my application. What are some things I could do to imporve my chances of getting a job here? I guess that is one of my biggest problems. If I got a job I could start correcting things. Right now might not be the best time for me to get a Charger, but if not now, when? Who knows if I will come across another one that fits the bill? Atleast I can keep it in a climate controlled barn while I fix other things in my life first, right? Anyway, instead of posting here, please email me with positive ways that I can better myself. Sorry for getting a little defensive but when you are already at your limit, the next little thing pushes you over the edge....my new email is:

Thanks for letting my rant...I feel a little better but there is always room for improvement...

If you are going to be judgemental about that then keep your comments to yourself. I don't need it. I am looking for support, and only positive please! I can't talk about what is really going on here because if you don't know me personally, then you wouldn't understand.
I'm not sure which post this was directed at, but you must understand that the thoughts expressed here were derived from what you've written. You're right, we don't know you very well...only from what you've written, so some replies will be written as such.

I hope things will go better for you soon & that you'll be able to figure a way out of this slump. Hang in there, tomorrow's another day & nothing stays the same forever.

Maybe you & your fiance should get married...that's guaranteed money back in taxes right there. ;D

I have heard that there area ton of Jobs in Wyoming (I think that was the state) but I don't know if moving all the way over there will help much (it takes money to move LOL) and my fiance gets paid every other week. The problem is saving up money to do anything, we are lucky if we can pay our rent and utilities, have money for gas and food and have $10 left over. The $10 usually goes to either my parents or his parents to pay them back for money they have lent us this past year....and Tom you are right, I didn't come here looking for pity.
