Does anyone know and understand Linux?  I have a Linux class and have this project that I need to write the specific steps to partition a hard drive for Linux using fdisk.  Create a root partition as well as a partition to hold the /home directory and I have to make one for the swap partition.  I'm a little confused about how to go about this and all the commands.  Anyone have any pointers to help me out?

This site's server runs Linux but I'm not doing your homework... :P

Try a Google search for "Linux partition fdisk" (without the quotes. There are probably several thousand tutorials on how to do just what you are asking.

A friend of mine knows Linux real well. I'll ask him about it.

I've done it a handful of times but it's one of those things that I just do without thinking about it - other than "Do I really want to wipe this drive clean?"

You need to get the PC booted up on some sort of OS. It can be DOS - just make sure it's new enough that the version of fdisk that comes with it will create an appropriate partition type. But really, no one uses DOS for this anymore - at least not directly.
If the PC supports booting from CD and you've got a bootable CD with your Linux distro on it, that's the easiest way.
Once the CD boots, it should give you a prompt to start a setup script. Just follow the prompts for installation - it will ask you all of the things it needs to know about how you want the partitions done and call fdisk with the right parameters. (and then it will go on to ask you about everything that you want to install..)
Since I usually do this on an older PC that doesn't get used for anything else, I just accept the defaults for partitions and let it rip...

If you need to know the details of the parameters and get some guidelines on how the drive should be divided up, then you need to yank out the manual or go to www.linux.org and read the online tutorials there..

Now that I think about it, I need to do up a Linux box this week for some testing...

I was thinking of installing Linux, so I got one of the cds off my brother (he gets them in boxes of 50) and I stuck in the "Live" cd, and there was only 1 program that I wanted but didnt already have, so I thought "Nah, stuff this." and went and made a cup of tea.
