Ok so I have Basically just ran my 440 for 20-30 mins to break in the cam......But I took car out of garage saturday and fired it up and noticed during idle it had slight smoking from left side exhaust pipe....
Now is this Normal for a engine that has not seated its rings yet?.......could this be still residue from all the oil used during assembly of pistons in the bore?.....

I have also read that a non properly installed intake gasket may cause oil seaping in and burning.....

I am 100% confident my engine builder did it right as far as rings etc,.....he did complete bottom end...I installed heads and intake etc......

Advise?

Lots of smoke? Continually or does it fade in time?

Mine never smoked, even when i first fired it up.

Not lots of smoke...a little, reving it does Not create a cloud by any means.......maybe carb is running rich ...I know timing is off to......

first off...what "color" is the smoke?

71green go

My Guess is either your PCV valve isnt working right or you are still burning off whatever got spilled on the headers/block during the motor swap.

My car would smoke like your talking about until I read up on PCV systems... and low and behold I did'nt have one. No more smokey smokey for me! :2thumbs:

If you car does not have a PCV system, it's simple. Add a PCV valve to one valve cover which attaches to a hose then run that to the carb and then run a 'breather' on the opposite valve cover. Having a breather on both valve covers does not work properly and would lead to smoking I believe. This solved my smoking problem 100%. Not saying it's your issue but it's something to look for.

Well.........I do have a brand new PCV valve .....ummm, that I have not run a hose to yet  :smilielol:....I have not even looked for a connection on the carb where it may go, I have the power booster vacuum going to the back of the holly carb......where do u run the PCV valve to?

68CoronetRT

That's where I ran mine to since I dont have power brakes :shruggy:.

Look up carb PCV system and see if another port will work?

A383Wing

it should go to the back of carb so the vapors get evenly distributed to all the cylinders equally. Power brakes usually go off the one intake runner port on the rear of intake manifold

You need a PCV system working correctly before diagnosing why and how there is smoke from pipes

Steve, you need to connect your PCV valve  :slap:

If this is a fresh build the rings will require some time to break in. A quick and easy way to seat the rings up is to engine-brake the car ; leave it in first gear and slowly accelerate to 40mph and let off the throttle allowing the engine to slow down the car. Do this for 10 or so repetitions and your rings will be seated in.  ;)

now just asking here cause I know the PCV has to be hooked up but could it also be a defective plug?

Thanks guys!....I havent driven the car yet so I will correct everything before hand.....
Currently I ran the Vaccum for booster behind carb.......I will disconnect that and route the PCV there
I checked last night and sure enough the CH4B manifold has a 3/8 thrd port that is plugged, I will remove the plug and install a fitting to run to the booster  :2thumbs:

Also there is another vent on the other valve cover that connects to the dual snorkal breather...That I have Not hooked up yet  :slap: ........

didnt realise how this system may cause these issues!

The plugs are all brand new with only 25 mins of break in time on them.....so hopefully not fouled

I will correct all this on the weekend and report back

Thanks again Guys!
