So, I'm happy with the around town performance of my '71 Charger, (500 stroker, 727, 8 3/4 with 3.23) but 3000 rpm on the freeway is a little much, and that's only 70mph. I want to convert it to a 5 spd TKO600, but around $5000 for the kit is a bit much to swallow. Does anyone have any recommendations for a less expensive alternative? I know I could throw a 2.71 in the back, but I'd lose a lot off the line. Gear Vendors? Maybe, but if I'm spending thousands, an extra pedal would make it more fun. This site always has the answers! Anyone?

Aaaaand I just saw the thread titled restomod options. Very similar, but cost wasn't listed as a factor.

I asked close to the same question on the ebody site and got alot of good info.  Here is a link . . .

Tomorrow is promised to NOBODY . . . .

I got a 5-speed in a Charger for under $1000.00, but the problem comes in when people want the best MPG, strength, lower crusie RPM's, fit, etc...

No way your not gonna get around dropping at LEAST $4k.....Even with used parts, a 6 spd will run you WAY up there unless you find the one dumbass on the planet that will sell one for $500.00.

I got a viper T56 for $600 a few years back.  Your best bet would be a generic TOO transmission and just "making it work". That cost me about $2700 for a strong reliable system.

Generic TOO? Did you mean TKO, like Tremec? The $2700 part is why I ask. If I could piece something together for less than $3000, I'd jump on it. More description of this, please...

Yes -  TKO ... .    ended up getting a new-ish TKO trans off of CL for $1250 - added a scattershield for $400 - went with McLeod clutch, hydraulic clutch setup, shortedned driveshaft, modified floor, made my own crossmemeber.

Total cost was around $2700

Cheaper than a GV unit....

I've seen a couple TKO's for sale out of mustangs. I'll call Keisler and see what they'll charge for all the incidentals. I can fab up the crossmember. I want to keep the shifter in the right place to continue to use the console, and I'd hate to lose the sound I get with the 3" TTI X pipe. When the hell is Passon gonna release that damn 833 based 5 speed?! I'd much rather pay for that than a TKO.
