Is it time to sell?

I thought of selling the Charger has been crossing my mind recently. I had a post here a few years ago about selling the Charger to help with a home purchase. I did manage to buy my home in november 2011 and keep the Charger. I assumed once my Charger was in my own garage that I would start using it more. That really hasn't happened. I have had in out once this year and haven't even managed to oil changed yet. This past weekend showed me where my heart is now. The weather was perfect and changing the oil and going to a show or cruise in should have been at the top of my to do list. But I spent the entire weekend doing yard work. Clearing brush and a getting poison ivy rash on my arms. Getting the Charger out really didn't cross my mind.
The Charger isn't costing me much to keep so I don't have to sell it. But I would enjoy sliding my house and putting on a new deck more then having the Charger sit. My daughter getting married next year is another cost thats in my mind when thinking about this. The Charger has it's matching number 440 engine (replacement trans) and the broadcast sheet. All stock except for the tach (was just a clock) and the air cleaner/tips (N97 Ca car). It even has its original 14 X 5.5 date coded road wheels. You guys gave me great advise when I thought about selling before. So please any advice now will be greatly appreciated. If anyones interested pm and we can talk. Thanks guys!

Cooter

Sure it may very well be time to sell, just don't be too disappointed when you recieve offers/bids about 10K lower than what you have in it. Go for it.

what cooter said.....I personally would not sell it unless I was in dire need of cash flow such as the position I was in last time i.e. job loss, economy was horrible, etc.  To me it seems you have a stable job save a little here and there for that deck, your daughters marriage, etc.  your attention for the charger will come back.

Once its gone though you will then realize you will miss it and want it back.

And it sounds like it is time to sell.  I have done it for the same reasons your are considering. . . well, except the wedding.  I will sell one, and if I want another one, I buy another one.  I have been watching prices closely, and they have been going back up. You have a sweet car, should be easy to move.  And remember, if you want another one, there are always a bunch of them for sale.  Good luck.  :2thumbs:

I second what Chargerboy said. Years ago, I sold all my old stuff to be able to get into a better home in a better neighborhood and then I got into home improvement mode. Now that everything's long done, it was time for me to get back into the cars.

skip68

Yep!   Time to say thanks and goodbye.   Once you start to get that loss of interest feeling it's time to move on.   You can always find another one.    Good luck.

If you don't need to sell the car to do the necessary home improvements, then don't sell. You may end up regretting it.
When we moved into our home over 10 years ago I hardly touched the cars, either. After the first few years when the bulk of the housework was done I was able to get back to them. Now, I balance my time between the house/yard and the cars.
On the flip side, if you have indeed lost interest and would prefer doing siding & a deck vs owning your car, then you know in your heart it's time to sell.

Nobody said it yet BUT what an amazing wedding ride for your daughter. If you really want to get rid of it sell it after the wedding.

Bill and Charger Fan cover my thoughts for what it's worth. Everyone gets the home improvement urge......nothing wrong with that. Unless push comes to shove don't sell your car. After a couple years of pouring simolians into the house you will dearly appreciate a renewed interest in that gorgeous finished car of yours.

You can always find a tri five Chevy, Camero and like that but a MOPAR like yours down the line......I think you would rue the day you sold your Charger.  :Twocents:

I regret selling my rusted out xp charger when I needed to pay college debt.  It took me 10 years to complete my bachelors degree! Time to start the hunt again! Pm me if you do decide to put her up. she is just what I'm looking for. I would love her, and wax her, and keep her I'm tippy top shape!  :2thumbs:

y3chargerrt

Alot of good points here. Since moving in here 17 months ago I have already put 25k into my place. I also spend 8K on a lawyer for my daughter custody case. After all that I have 7K on one credit card and thats all the debt I have excluding the house. The only reason I have that is I used that card to pay Window Nation. So It is not a financial need that I have to sell my Charger. Anyone is welcome to pm me and we can talk. Ryan pm me and we can talk on the pone later. It's not like I wont attend events this year. My Carlisle reservations were made last year.

I think this depends on you and the car.  I had mine sit for a long time before getting back to it.  At the time there was no common sense reason to keep it, but it did not cost much and it could just sit.  Now it is getting back into its original condition and I am glad I still have it.  Turns out my parents who bought the car and urged me to sell it are also glad I kept it.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Be hard for me to sell my T/A but a charger wood be even harder

Paul G

My opinion is, the Charger is already gone, you have lost enough interest in it that you really cant justify keeping it, you just have not pulled the plug on the sale yet. I have done that many times with different cars and not regretted it, for very long at least. Consider it sold and let it go. You will one day want another one and that is fine. There are more cars to find.

Say it aint so Ron!  Would definitely be sad to see it go.  I cant agree with others that say "you'll get another one"......To find another in the condition of Ron's car would be pretty costly.

I've personally seen this car at Carlisle and the restoration is absolutely beautiful.

I don't know whether to sell or not. I say not because your car is well sorted out and done to a high standard.

It will be hard to find a replacement if you're in the market again.  :Twocents:

I am still struggling with selling my c500. The motivation is the need to free up room as well as reduce the number of projects. If something has to sit outside all the time that's not good. I have fixed and enjoyed this car. It's time to move on. But It has become fairly clear that what I would take for this car is too high. So will these cars hold value and keep up with inflation. I think so but at some point we will die off and fewer will follow.
Like others have said. If later you want another they will be there. And if the values drop all the better to get another one.

It does not cost much to keep a car.  It will kill you to buy another one down the road. :Twocents:

Yes I am torn and this will not be an easy decision. Maybe just thinking about selling will get me motivated. I figured with insurance and minor maintence the car cost me $1.25 a day. So keeping it is no problem. I did enjoy the restoration process but I don't think I have another one in me. I have a Fed Ex box packed full of receipts from the resto that I refuse to ad up.So Chris your point about getting another one will be costly is a big part of my thought process. Please keep posting your comments as they do help alot.

With a fed ex box full of receipts I doubt you will recoup what you have it it or maybe break even at best ? When looking int he future chances are you'd have to spend more on the replacement then what you sold it for.

if it was a 318 driver or something sure sell it why not.

I didn't really feel the magic in one of my Chargers. Of course it was the one I spent the most money and time on. Now I'm putting a 4sp in it despite the fact that it's a 1 of 208 car. Make it into what you want!

I don't want to seem disrespectful towards anyone's loved ones - but dropping Charger-level money on a wedding is probably the worst use of cash I could think of.   If you're going to sell it, put that money into something else you will get long term enjoyment and investment out of.    Weddings are an expensive flash in the pan, and statistics show that the more money is spent on a wedding, ironcially, the shorter the marriage lasts.   The divorce rate in the US is somewhere around 55-60%, and the average marriage is only about 7 years.

Now trying to tell that to a young girl who wants her 'dream princess day with fairies and ponies and minstrels and unicorns and a chocolate fountain that sprays dreams and kisses' without making her resent you for being unrealistic... explains why people spend more than they make in a year on a wedding.    Ask me how I know :)

Where is the market right now for these cars?  I see it mentioned in various places that it's firming up a bit, but what does that really mean?  It is finally Spring, and that does tend to lend itself to some optimism, but....most of the folks that I know are still being very careful with their money.  With that being said, what is a realistic price expectation for a fully restored car?

Without looking at what restorations really cost (in time, trouble and money), what would the marketable range be, from low end to high end, for a nicely redone original, 2nd generation, R/T 440 car? We'll take hemi-cars out of consideration for the moment to keep it easier to focus on reality.

I'd guess from $40k to $65K depending on a car's options and the quality of the restoration work.  The upper end of that number would be for truly original, numbers-matching cars.  Any different opinions? Am I too low?

I agree completely with money still being tight. Your range is accurate except for the finer cars are selling on the low side. You need to be at BJ on a Saturday night with lots of alcohol flowing to get the higher dollars.

I would respetfully disagree on that. If you have a car (it's just a car) that you have lost interest in, myself, being a Dad would have no problems making my little girls dreams come true!

I would sell my 07 Ram PICK-UP for a wedding too. :yesnod:

Ram07

If thats a shot at me, didnt really sell it....traded it in, it was no longer needed (moved from country to town, and yeah, the truck was used as a truck to tow things, carry things and hit the bush for firewood)  Bought a Kia, put the balance toward my sons wedding....no regrets!

Well, not really the wedding I guess, but was a few bucks toward the downpayment of the house they bought! It was nice putting a chunk of change in the wedding card!

It all comes down to priorites, don't ya think? Keep a truck that had no use anymore, toss it...buy a POS, and give the leftover cash to the kid!

y3chargerrt

I would not sell my Charger for my daughters wedding. I love her but I know all too well about the divorce rate. She booked a venue for the Friday before memorial day next year. She is very frugal and right now it will cost me 4K.On Saturday the same venue is 6K. I have that covered. My boss refinanced his house to pay for his daughters wedding. Their flower bill will probably pay for my daughters wedding. I'm probably leaning more toward keeping it. Unless someone makes me an "offer you can't refuse"! I think a day driving it, changing the oil and waxing it will be just what the doctored ordered.

brigond

It does come down to priorities but I would hold out if at all possible. I always had a classic /antique car since I was able to drive ,in 1985. In the last 20 years, I've owned the same car up until I nought my Charger last December. Over the years I've thought about selling it for home repair and held out. That was two homes ago. I sold the old mint Chevy because there was nothing to do with it. It was mint and I couldn't bring myself to ruin its originality.

I can see selling for for a critical situation or an important priority like a wedding. Maybe you just lost all interest in your Charger and it doesn't bring you the joy it once did.  Just don't do it if you think there will be that feeling of sellers remorse. Sellers remorse can last longer than siding or a deck . :Twocents:

I guess it's time to sell if you think it's worth more now than it will be in a few more months or years.  If the money is important, than now is probably the time.

Like anything else in hobbys and sports, it's either in your blood or not.  For me, to give up a car is like giving up a child.  Can't explain it, just how I'm wired.  Some years I don't do much "car stuff" and others I do.  For me, the cars I have are keepers, unless life dictates I need to sell them.  I've worked my butt off and enjoying my car addiction.

Another "interest" I have is snowmobiling.  Been doing it for 25 years, and recently said screw it, need money for parts, plus don't have any time.  This I walked away with no problem..... :2thumbs:

My 69R/T finally arrived after almost 14 years from when I purchased it (tested my patience) and upon arrival into Australia and me recieving it something went wrong and customs had a field day with it.. Everything pulled apart and left hanging or LOST alltogether... Got it on a car trailer for the 3 hour journey home and at a fuel stop had a guy ask if its for sale and give me his business card saying he would go to $45K.. So I rang him and gave him the option and he didnt have any money.. Another guy advertised he wanted one up to $50K so I rang him and he said its a bit far to go (West Aust to South Aust) I explained that they come from U.S.A. and is that too far as well ??? So there seems to be plenty of people interested but only to tell me that its their dream car etc etc... SO... She can stay garaged until I thoroughly peruse this awesome site of info and get this baby on the road running one very long day away.. Time to sell ?? Nah :)
