Most desireable year

Obviously we love Chargers, with that said what year Charger is the most desireable? I'm not talking options or color combo, just what year body is the favorite of collectors. I have always been a 71 guy but if I were to guess I'd say a 70 is the most desireable. :drool5

Dino

Prices usually give the nod to the 69 with the 68 close behind.  70's bring lots of money with the right options but base models usually don't bring the coin the other two do.

1st and 3rd gens are way cheaper than any 2nd gen though.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

ODZKing

Interesting discussion.  I have ALWAYS been a fan of an underdog. Probably why I am a huge Mopar guy.  And when it comes to models, I have always liked what is different. When you say to a "non-car" person "I have 2 Charger's, the first thing they think is second gen because they have all been exposed to DOH or Bullitt or even more recent movies with second gens in them.
And many of those people don't even realize there was 2 years before that body style, let alone others after.
So clearly the most recognizable is the secong gen, most popular ... yeah probably.
I like to be different, that is why I have a 67 and 73.  My  :Twocents:

Dino

Bob we have mopars, we're all different!   :icon_smile_big:   :2thumbs:

I think it's a good thing that 1st and 3rd gens are cheaper...that way we can afford more of them.   :2thumbs:

I've always loved that long console in the 66 and the electroluminescent dash so I may end up with one of those some day.

When I feel the need to customize a charger then it'll be a 3rd gen, you can do so much with that car it's already starting to itch.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

68 is Tops for me!........however I own a 71, maybe one day I will have that 68

CaptMarvel

Own a 68 R/T, and love the 2nd gens (70's the least of them) but have always also loved the 66-67 fast backs..wouldn't mind having one someday...it's where Charger started!

70 Charger RT

I love the 2nd gens.  That being said, my first choice is the 70 R/T (gotta love those door scoops).

I'm more of a 2nd gen guy, but if it's a charger, it has provenance over the other cars.  I did turn down a  black 68 for a 69, gotta love the taillights and the split grill until you have to buy replacements :eek2:

70 first (I have a 70 R/T) and then the 68 I like the round tail lights

1969 IS THE YEAR (ALWAYS HAS BEEN) as that grill is second to none!  Followed by 1971, followed by 1970, followed by 1968...  Yes you read that correctly... 69 always is/was the ultimate charger, the pentical of the charger design, NOT TO MENTION THERE WAS A DAYTONA OPTION AVALIBLE THAT YEAR!  I LOVE to look at any 69 Charger, just as long as its not painted orange!  Followed by 71 (high impact colors, last year for hemi and pretty much the 440-6, functional fresh air hood options, hideaway head lights, awsome coke-bottle shape, one year tail lights and grills, you could even order a SUPER BEE Charger that year, and painted bumpers... 71 Chargers are SICK!)  Followed by 1970 Chargers (love them, just like the 69s adn 71s better), then the 68 Charger (owned a decent all original one, the whole time I wished it was a 69 instead!)

There you go, thats your list, from a die hard mopar guy that doesnt currently own any chargers, I have no reason to lie to you good people, it is what it is...  If you own any 66-74 Dodge Charger, your car still looks better than the "new chargers"

1970 was the pentical year for the Coronet, Cuda, Road Runner, GTX, Challenger, and other noteworthy Mopars.  :Twocents:

I owned a 69 Charger , loved it. My favorite is the 70. But I would prolly never drive one. My friend has offered to let me drive his 70.But, i am afraid i will clip something with the front . I have a hard enough time seeing over the hood of my Challenger.  :smilielol:

the 69 is probably the most desirable among collectors, many people take 70's and 68's and modify them to look like 69's, plus 69 parts were reproduced before the 68's or 70's so i guess there was more demand for them  :shruggy:

I think the 70 models were the boldest in all the makes.  The TA Challengers the side spoilers on the RT charger.  The Super bird.  A very good year.  That being said I love them all.

68 is always the best just because of the fact u just said.  Not many bought into making it rare because it was a first year with its so called flaws but now with modern tech all flaws are fixed.  69 though will always be most valuable due to a tv show I forgot its name with two dudes?

I love all the muscle cars from the early 60's up to 1972. My preference is a 69 then 68 followed 70. Our cars are classic and above all others followed by Chevelle SS big blocks followed by early Shelby GT Mustangs.......just my opinion.

1969 Bar none for obvious reasons mentioned. IMHO, many of the '68 & '70 fans I've talked with seem to pick these two over the '69 due to the same reasons the '69 is so popular.

If Stu says so then it is true!!
When the '68 model came out, Dodge got it right.  But, in those days the manufacturers made changes every year so people knew you had a NEW car.  The '68 was a smash hit and I can only conclude that the reason the '69 sold slightly more was that many people were saving up to buy the new '68 but didn't have enough money until the '69 model was out.  The poor souls had to settle for second best if the wanted a NEW Charger.  In '70 Dodge realized their mistake and took the ugly center piece out of the grill.  But they again flawed the design by wrapping the whole front end with a chrome bumper.  I was there and I certify this as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  Bob :icon_smile_big:

stu~ I thought so too, when I was a kid... But after doing some growing up and sole searching, you can not deny the 69 has a better looking grill, and the tail lights match the body lines better, the 69 is to me the perfect 68.  I do like them circle side markers though... And the Bullit car being a 68, I can see why you love them... Im just saying, picture an F6 with white tail stripe 69 charger R/T... or that neat bronze metalic gold color with a black stripe 69 R/T... It doesnt get any better than that for a charger! (unless you have a Daytona!)

Blusmbl

68/69 is a tossup for me, with 70 trailing behind a little.  I like the SE option on '69's, and agree the grille is nicer, but I'm torn on the taillights.  I like the 68 stripe and markers better.  Also don't care for the door lock location on the 69/70's.  The 70 SE door panels are the coolest but the key location/column isn't as nice as in the dash on 68/69's.

For me it's the 68-69 with 70 close behind. can't deny they had a winner. It will last longer than we will. Most of us get imprinted with a car image early on and that stays with us forever. My example was a 69 superbee. My first new car at nineteen. When the 70 coronets came out I could not believe any one would want one of those. What put me off was they called it a coronet. It looked good but was not what they said it was. (think new 4 door charger). The 70 coronets look much better today than they did when they came out and I like the look of the newer chargers but they should have used new names for them. The new challenger lives up to it's old name. Wish they would do that for the charger.

To me the cheese grater grille on a 69 makes it look less muscular somehow. No surprise but I've always preferred the 70 over the rest....everyone had already bought a 68 or 69 so the 70s are rarer and have all the cool options. I think the open grille on a 70 and 68 looks tough / mean.

For me, it's a toss-up between the '68 and the '69.

Like someone else said earlier, the '69 tail lights look better. IMO the wide bar-style lights match the rest of the car better than the two little round ones. The '68s have a much meaner looking front grille. I've always thought they looked tougher from front-on.

I suppose I COULD just bolt a '68 grille onto the front of my '69..? Hahaha :icon_smile_big:

Never been a fan of the wrap-around grille on the '70s... No particular reason, don't think it's particularly ugly or anything, I just think the '68/69 grilles are a lot better.

I'm not sure the "masses" have a user ID here  :shruggy:

repop parts are not a good indicator.....tooling and production of parts is based on sales opportunities...rarer models, may be more desireable but not worth the investment in parts creation vs. return on investment. A one of 7 Hemi Cuda convertibles is super desireable but if there was a unique part for them why would I invest in making it when my total demand base is limited to 7 and some clones.

Taking the Dukes of Hazzard out of the equation.....I'd say Hollywood has used 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen cars across the board.

Being as un-biased as I can I feel the 69 is the most popular.  Many here said what "they" like, and not what is actually the most popular.  Had they actually voted which is most popular, I believe a 69 would be the answer nearly every time. I have had a 68, a few 69's and a 71.

Skip68 started a poll , which is the best way to find out which year is most desirable within this forum.  Nationally , we would have to look at historical car sales.  But that won't tell us what peoples favorite years are (today) in 2013.  I guess we can use skip68 poll as a sampling to get an idea of what charger enthusiast  today would choose.
