Anyone know about this R12

Picked 5 cans of this up the other day at a yard sale for $20. FSP Appliance care products by Whirlpool. I assume it works in the older R12 cars?

I would not use it...it's probably flammable...do not mix unknown products together

I think the key word is appliance.  It could be the person you bought it off of was thinking the same thing you are, but found out that it only works on appliances.  Read the instructions.

If your looking to recharge your ac, convert over to R134A.  It's more readily available.

I wouldn't use it as it was sold for a reason. It is different for appliances than for auto's. We hadda guy here putting PROPANE in A/C systems. Worked GREAT for a while until one hadda leak, and of the four kids in the car, one just had to light a cigarette....

Turned a Ford Escort into a Taurus, Blew out all of their ear drums, they were bleeding from the ears, one hadda concusion,etc..
Just cause it's cheap, doesn't mean it'll work.
With all the 134A systems out there to "Retro" older systems over, there is no excuse for buying anything old, in cans, looking for R-12 anymore.

I will have to look at the other 4 cans I got. I think they said R12 substitute.  I defiantly wont use it if its gonna make something blow up!

Hi,

I think one thing you can be fairly certain of is that it is not real R-12. As others have stated from the labeling on the can it's either some type of R134 mix with an oil carrier or some type of butane based product. Both of these types of mixes are being sold as R-12 substitutes. The butane based stuff is flammable as noted and the R-134 mixes have issues where the oil carrier leaks out first and the compressor then is damaged from lack of lubrication. That's not so much of a problem with RV-2 compressors as they have an internal oil pump, but it's death to the newer axial type compressors. One big problem with these so called R-12 substitutes is that once you put them in your A/C system many shops will no longer service the system as they don't want to contaminate their recovery equipment with this stuff.

There is plenty of real original R-12 around, Look on EBay.  If you get your 609 certification you can buy all you need and keep the older systems R-12 which really works best in them. R-134A is selling for about $10 a can these days and R-12 seems to be going for around $25 on EBay so the price difference isn't all that great. Especially if you consider the cost of doing a proper R-134 conversion.

There's tons of R12 available on CL and others, but the stuff you got there is not intended for your car.  These substitutes have been known to blow up.  Like others stated, switch to r134a.

Also no where on that can does it say it is R-12. It is just comparing it to a real can of R-12.

That Whirpool FSP is just their name for R-134A, it's used to convert R-12 appliances to R-134.
