Transmission Shifting from 2nd - 3rd to fast??

Spring time is here!!!

Took the car for a small drive today. It seems to be shifting from 2nd to 3rd way to fast, pretty much I have no 2nd gear.  I will start from a dead stop accel moderately, it will shift into 2nd just fine,  but then it almost immediatly shifts into 3rd, its actually hard for me to even catch it,  but you can hear it double shift up to 3rd.

Can this just be adjusted with tramsmission linkage up at the carb. I am taking about the thread piece that runs on the throttle of the carb. ??

Did it do it last year b4 you put it away too?

Yes, after I got all my electrical gremlins figured out, and vaccum leak fixed I only got to take the car for a couple short drives, but yes it was doing it last year.

The throttle pressure (kickdown) linkage controls the upshift speed. If the carb and linkage are stock, it probably just needs adjustment; lengthening the top rod will make it shift later.

If, however, you have an aftermarket carb it needs the special Mopar throttle lever extension to make the linkage work correctly. Holley is #20-7 and Edelbrock is #1481.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Ok perfect, thats is the answer I was looking for. If I make the rod longer it should make it shift later. I will try this first, if not I will look for extension part.

I am running a a Holley

Thank you

The kick down should be at full throw at WOT is what I was told

If you're running an aftermarket Holley don't even try to make the linkage work without the correct adapter, you need the adapter.

There is no requirement that the trans lever be full back at WOT, adjusting it that way usually results in late shifts.

:rofl:Well not the first time I "might" have gotten bad advice!

Also be aware that with light acceleration the trans shifts real fast.  I'm in 3rd almost as soon as I'm off my driveway.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Here's a typical factory spec on shift speeds.

Throttle pressure linkage adjustment yes, verify that the linkage is assembled correctly at valve body input. Shift is controlled by governor and throttle pressure. Governor and line pressure easy to check. Sticking governor weights or valve body malfunction possibly.
Throttle pressure is adjusted on valve body by measuring valve end distance from valve body and if incorrectly set will mess up part throttle shifts. Line pressure is set after adjusting throttle pressure.
Good luck, Chango
