This is going to be a big first for me. I have the 70 shop manual and they mention several specialized tools for the removal and installation of the steering column (70 Coronet auto). What if any are needed (other than a wheel puller) and can I get this done by spring if I never did it before???  My reason for pulling it out is to replace the ignition switch. I have inadvertently pulled away the coupler from the steering gear and am just going to pull it out now to make the switch insertion easier. Thanks

The first time I removed a column was a couple months ago, alone in my garage, and I didn't need any special tools.  I just undid the bolts under the dash, drove out the pin on the column under the hood where the column goes into the steering gear box, using a fine punch and a hammer, pulled on the column from inside, and bam, it was out, that easy.  At least it was for me.  My car is a '69 Charger that was a column shift.

I have yet to buy the new column, gear box, and put them in, but you can definitely remove the column without any special tools.  :2thumbs:

Could some one post a pic of were the pin is at that needs to be removed?

70 sublime

I had to change the one in my 70 Charger
In the picture the one on the left is from a 73 Charger
One in the middle is from a 70 Charger
One on the right is from a 68 Charger

At the very bottom of the column there is the larger section that is kind of a universal that lets the steering column shaft come into the gear box at a bit of an angle
There is a roll pin that goes through the universal from left to right
You can just see the hole on the column on the right (right near the very bottom)
