I agree.

Gary is a total sh!thole, taken over by thugs.  Is considered by most a suburb of Chicago.

Between now and when you are scheduled to leave, try to figure out a way go someplace else.

Well, if you're staying at the Hilton you should be ok.   They had 27 shootings at the Hilton last year BUT only 9 died.  That gives you a 66% chance of survival.    :icon_smile_big: :smilielol:

When I have to head out east, I will stop and pay whatever fuel price there is 50 miles outside of chicago just so I don't have to stop in either Chicago or Gary. Last time I was in Gary i thought i was going to die. I was the only white person that I saw while I was there, and they didn't seem to appreciate my "ethnic diversity" to theirs.

I'd try like hell to go somewhere else.

You could probably raise those odds a little by staying over in Calumat City.

Seriously,  I think Gary has a somewhat unique history in that it was actually built by a big corp for their employees.  I don't remember all the details, but, the company actually built the school, city hall, houses, the whole schmeer.

Twenty years ago I had a customer in Calumet City.  The Calumet/Gary area reminded me of the town in that Dan Akroyd/Chevy Chase movie "Nothing but Trouble".

nvrbdn

im going to a meeting at 9;00 monday on the trip. i will find out all the details about the whole enchalada then. and you can bet i will be bringing up this stuff. i will find out then where we are supposed to be staying. do they have an airport, or do they use chicago??

If you are driving in feel free to carry, in fact I would not leave the house without one.

Indiana recognizes all other states gun permits.  :2thumbs:

If you are flying in I guess you can now bring a pocket knife.  :-\

If you notice, The Music Man is shot on the same set as The Dukes of Hazzard.  Even though the film was made 15 years prior to The Dukes, you can clearly see the Bank, Bosses House, Courthouse and many of the stores around the square.  The livery stable, where Robert Preston and Buddy Hackett do a song is Cooters Garage.

Also, the movie The Music Man, is supposed to take place in River City Iowa.  Robert Preston, Professor Hill is from Gary, Indiana. One of my favorite movies. . . yes, I am a dork.  ;)

Merrillville. . . . . much better.

I was last though there about a year ago, I could not believe how much it had grown. Did not see any problem areas, however, I did not stay.

Not sure how long you will be there, but a little town down 30 called Plymouth, has a Blueberry festival.  During that time they have a huge car show, very well done. Not sure when it is, will have to Google it.

Seeing you are only an hour and a half from Fort Wayne, a couple Ryan Newman fans may have to get together.

There are some really good car shows/cruise ins/ Kruse Auctions throughout the summer in this area.

Kokomo Chrysler Transmission plant has a show every year.  Last time I was there it was huge.  Chrysler even had a nice display concept cars there, including a old turbine car.

On weeknights you can head over to some of the cruises in the Chicago area, there are quite a few really good ones in the south/southwest suburbs.  Check the listings at:

Wednesday nights in Lemont is excellent!

See you there?

made it to indiana this morning. went into gary to get to the mill. yep, even on a sunny day this city is tore up. 70% of the buildings are trashed on the main drive thru. and half of those are burned out. the good news is after we made it to the mill, leaving we were able to drive out the gate and imediately hit a toll road that goes east a few miles and jump off for a nice drive to merillville.  this town im in is nice. went to olive garden for dinner tonight. now im kicked back at the hilton, and checking the internet. so far, so good. but sitting in indiana isnt gona get the car ready for mega mopar may 17th at home. but i will try.
